Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Picked Sixth in OVC Poll

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – With the start of the 2014 cross country season just weeks away, the Ohio Valley Conference released its predicted order of finish.

The men's team was chosen to finish sixth, the same place it ended the 2013 season.

The women's team was chosen to finish sixth, moving up two spots from its eighth place finish at the OVC Championship a season ago.

"At the end of the day, it's what you do with it and how you perform at the conference championships," said SIUE cross country Head Coach Eileen McAllister. "I think we'll be ready."

Eastern Kentucky was chosen to repeat as the men's conference championships, garnering 10 first place votes and 120 overall points. They were followed by Belmont (two first place votes, 111 points), Southeast Missouri (94), Eastern Illinois (92), Morehead State (84), SIUE (75), UT Martin (50), Murray State (42), Austin Peay (41), Tennessee Tech (40), Jacksonville State (32), and Tennessee State (11).

On the women's side, Eastern Kentucky was chosen to win the conference, receiving 11 first place votes and 121 overall points. EKU was followed by Belmont (one first place vote, 110 points), Eastern Illinois (99), Southeast Missouri (94), Murray State (80), SIUE (61), Austin Peay (60), Morehead State (53), Jacksonville State (50), Tennessee Tech (31), UT Martin (21), and Tennessee State (12).

"The team has had goals that they've set for themselves over the summer. They'll have those goals independent of rankings," said McAllister. "If anything, it will be a motivator to them."

The 2014 Ohio Valley Conference Championship is set for Nov. 1 in Jacksonville, Alabama.
