EDWARDSVILLE, Ill.—SIUE Head Coach Eileen McAllister announced the 2014 schedule for the cross country team that includes two home events for the Cougars.
"Our home course is fantastic. It is an awesome venue that we want to showcase," said McAllister. "Our athletes have a real sense of pride when they succeed on the challenging course in front of the home crowd."
The Cougars are set to host the fifth annual SIUE Cross Country Challenge on Friday, Sept. 12, with the women's 5K race beginning at 5:30 p.m. followed by the men's 8K at 6:15 p.m.
SIUE returns home to host the third annual SIUE John Flamer Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 4. The action begins with the women's 6K race at 10 a.m. and wraps up with the men's 8K at 10:45 a.m.
"The John Flamer Invitational is a special event to honor SIUE's first cross country coach. It is our fall alumni reunion event," said McAllister. "The meet also coincides with our fall awards ceremony and SIUE homecoming."
The Cougars open up their 2014 campaign at the EIU Walt Crawford Open Friday, Sept. 5, in Charleston, Ill. The women's 5K race kicks off the event at 4:45 p.m. and concludes with the men's 8K at 5:30 p.m.
The newest addition to the schedule is the Roy Griak Invitational at the University of Minnesota Saturday, Sept. 11. The competition begins with the men's 8K at 12:20 p.m. and concludes with the women's 6K at 1:10 p.m.
"We definitely needed another meet. We wanted to find something in mid to late September that was a larger meet," said McAllister. "Really the whole point is to get us better prepared and to help implement strategy specific to larger meets."
McAllister and her squad make two trips to Peoria, Ill., for the Bradley Pink Classic on Friday, Oct. 17 and the NCAA Midwest Regional on Nov. 14.
"We will have the advantage of competing on the course less than a month before the Regional," added McAllister.
The Bradley Classic serves as the final tune up before Ohio Valley Conference Championship action which is slated to begin Nov. 1, at Jacksonville State.
