CHARLESTON, Ill. -- Southern Illinois University Edwardsville's Kayla Brown bested the field at the Eastern Illinois Open and nearly set a school record in the process.
Brown, who defeated her nearest competitor by nearly 18 seconds, ran the 5,000-meter course in 17 minutes, 44.98 seconds. It was the second fastest time in school history. Breanne Steffens set the school record back in 2003 with a time of 17:29.
No full scores were announced at the meet. A double dual scoring put SIUE ahead of Millikin and just behind Southeast Missouri State, Southern Illinois and Eastern Illinois.
