CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois University Edwardsville runner Kayla Brown won the Saluki Invitational cross country race for the second straight season Saturday with an impressive victory.
Brown ran nearly 10 seconds faster than her winning time last season. This season, she defeated Murray State's Katelyn Jones by four seconds. Brown's winning time was 18 minutes, 18.34 seconds, in the 6,000-meter race.
Kelly Flounders was SIUE's next best finisher at 18th overall with a time of 19:39.31. She was followed by Maggie Krall (20:14.62), Aftan Noon (20:22.66) and Stacey Briggs (21:11.41). SIUE placed fourth as a team with host SIU Carbondale finishing winning the meet 34-38 over Murray State.
On the men's side, SIU Carbondale took a clean sweep of the top six places minus an unattached runner. Kyle Cameron posted a ninth-place finish in 25:55.18 to lead SIUE's charge.
SIUE placed third at the meet behind SIUC and Eastern Illinois. SIUE bested the SIU Alumni team, Southeast Missouri State, McKendree and Murray State.
SIUE's second through fifth place runners were all in a bunch. Sean Gosewich finished 22nd overall in 27:08.79 followed by Marc Amarillas in 26th at 27:24.37, Shawn Dillard in 27th at 27:28.38, Ryan Wessling in 32nd at 27:41.01.
Next up for the Cougars is their only home event of the season. Border Wars takes place Saturday, Oct. 11 at the SIUE Cross Country Course.
