TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - SIUE evened its overall record to 4-4 Sunday with a 25-23, 23-25, 25-17, 25-22 victory at Indiana State in the finale at the Drury Inn/ASICS Volleyball Classic.
SIUE middle hitter Kelsey Augustine and libero Chelsea Colclasure were named to the All-Tournament team. Augustine hit .372 for the weekend with 23 kills. Colclasure picked up 59 digs and now leads the team with 4.72 digs per set.
The Cougars clipped the Sycamores for the first time in the series. Indiana State had won the four previous meetings but saw a Cougar team this time that cut down on its attack errors significantly over the last 24 hours.
SIUE had just 19 attack errors against Indiana State which was nearly half of what it finished with Saturday in a loss to Western Illinois. SIUE Head Coach Leah Johnson said minimizing errors was a team focus.
"That's the team we have to evolve into," she said.
"I felt like they (the outside hitters) really focused on how to score," said Johnson. "The outside hitters made smarter plays and it made for a better IQ of volleyball."
Indiana State, 3-4, was bolstered by Morgan Dall who led the Sycamores with 21 kills.
SIUE's serving also caused headaches for the Sycamores. The Cougars collected nine service aces, including three off the bench from Brooke Smith.
The Cougars now head to Bowling Green, Ohio, next weekend for the Best Western Falcon Invitational. SIUE will face Canisius, Bowling Green, and Michigan State during the two-day tournament.
"I feel positive that we are heading into this week challenging ourselves to get better," Johnson added.
