EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Southern Illinois University Edwardsville volleyball evened its record at 3-3 Saturday with a victorious sweep over Montana State and Western Carolina at the Drury Inn ISU Classic.

SIUE defeated Montana State 25-20, 25-21, 17-25, 25-19 and Western Carolina 25-6, 25-23, 25-21.

After a five-set loss to tournament host Indiana State on Friday night, the Cougars closed out the tournament on a high note with their first back-to-back victories of the season.

"We didn't dwell on last night and moved on. We had some confidence from last night despite the loss," said SIUE Head Coach Todd Gober.

Sydney Winslow recorded a team-best 13 kills in both matches. She lifted her hitting percentage to .295 for the season. "Sydney had a tremendous weekend - a monster weekend," said Gober.

Kelsey Augustine completed her first series of matches with a .472 hitting percentage. "Kelsey stepped up and played a tremendous series. I'm very impressed with her maturity," said Gober.

Gober added that he was pleased with the performance of freshmen Lexi Cibulka and Julia Whitfield as both continue to get some college experience.

"Sammi Minton also played well. She started to connect with her hitters," said Gober of the Cougars' starting setter.

SIUE defeated Montana State in four sets. The Cougars took the first two sets before dropping the third. Two late kills by Cibulka put SIUE over the top in the fourth set.

The Cougars came out on fire in the second match of the day against Western Carolina. SIUE rallied for a 12-1 lead to begin the match behind the serving of Minton and Whitfield. Winslow recorded three straight kills at the beginning of the set to pace SIUE.

SIUE hit .297 as a team against Western Carolina. Gober said Karie Downing helped anchor the defense with 14 digs and a team-high three service aces.

The Cougars now return home Tuesday for a 7 p.m. match at the Vadalabene Center. SIUE entertains Illinois State. -siue cougars-
