EDWARDSVILLE, ILL. - Southern Illinois University Edwardsville volleyball enters its first match this weekend with its most consistent lineup.
SIUE coach Todd Gober said he will have a set lineup this weekend at the Chattanooga Tournament. After eight matches of mixing and matching players, Gober said the time has come to get settled in.
"We've played enough matches and used enough combinations. We finally believe a starting lineup has begun to emerge," said Gober.
SIUE faces three matches at the Chattanooga Tournament. The Cougars meet Loyola of Chicago at 5 p.m. ET Friday. On Saturday, the Cougars take on host Chattanooga at noon ET followed by Austin Peay at 2:30 p.m. ET.
Gober said the play of junior right-side hitter Sydney Winslow and senior libero Tiffany Turner have stood out so far. "Tiffany has played exceptionally well and has battled through preseason injuries," he said.
Winslow has been a member of the first two All-Tournament teams. She leads the team in a handful of categories, including hitting percentage (.288) and kills per set (2.60). She is tied with freshman setter Sammi Minton for the lead in services aces with six.
Gober said that despite his team's 0-8 record, he sees the Cougars continuing to improve. He noted that at one point this past weekend five of six players on the floor were freshmen.
"This team believes that once we fix a couple of things we can start stringing some wins together," Gober said.
This is SIUE's first match ever against Chattanooga, a member of the Southern Conference. The Cougars dropped matches last season to Austin Peay and Loyola. Austin Peay is a future Ohio Valley Conference opponent.
