Krystal Majernik (Normal) had 41 assists to lead Southern Illinois University Edwardsville over Lewis 30-20, 30-11, 30-26 in college volleyball on Saturday afternoon.
Majernik averaged 14 assists per game in defeating the Flyers and Wisconsin-Parkside over the weekend. For the second day in a row Tina Talsma (Ontario, Canada) led all hitters with 14 kills and a .444 hitting percentage as the Cougars improve to to 10-4 overall and 2-0 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Flyers fell to 7-5 overall and 0-2 in conference play.
Heather Bonde (Millstadt) and Kindra Westendorf (Effingham) had solid games for the Cougars. Bonde recorded 13 kills, while Westendorf had 11 and nine digs as SIUE hit .286 for the contest.
Bonde also had the hot hand serving as she and Shannon Winkeler (Bartelso) each had three aces and Beth DeGreeff (St. Louis) had two, as the Cougars totaled 10 service aces. Allison Buss (Towanda) and Jenny Heimann (Germantown) passed the ball well for SIUE. Buss finished with 16 digs while Heimann had 9.
Lewis was led by Rory Harrison with 11 kills and a .310 hitting percentage in the match. Ruen Rochelle recorded 23 assists for the Flyers who hit .103 for the contest. Maggie Haen led Lewis with 12 digs.
SIUE's next match is Tuesday night as they travel to face McKendree at 7 before heading on the road for GLVC action at Northern Kentucky on Friday and at Kentucky Wesleyan on Saturday.
