CARBONDALE, Ill. – The SIUE track and field team wrapped up the Bill Cornell Spring Classic Saturday. The SIUE jump team found success during the Cougars first outdoor meet of the season. Nichyria Byrd won the women's triple jump and Ethan Poston placed first in the men's high jump for the Cougars.
"This weekend served as a great icebreaker for the outdoor season," SIUE Head Coach Scott Block said. "I was pleased with the effort from the team this weekend, and I am excited to see how we progress through the season."
In the women's triple jump, Byrd placed first with a mark of 39 feet, 3 inches. Brittney Gibbs took second in the event with a leap of 38-11. The women's long jump saw Byrd place second (19-1.5) and Savannah Sullivan taking fourth (17-8.25) for the Cougars.
Poston won the men's high jump in jump off at 6-8.75 against Willie Rogers and Caleb Vogel of SIU Carbondale.
On the men's side, Matthew O'Connor took second in the 800m (1:51.29) and fourth in the 1500m (3:52.62). Landon Skelly finished sixth in the 1500m (3:57.25) for the Cougars.
In the throwing events, SIUE's Austin Lynch placed third in the discus (149-4) and sixth in the hammer (176-10).
Next week, the SIUE track and field team will have split competition. The Cougars will be split between the John Creer Invite (Mar. 30), Wash U. Invite (Mar. 29-30) and the Pepsi Florida Relays (Mar. 28-30).
