EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – The SIUE track and field teams will travel to Cookeville, Tennessee, to compete in the Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Championships Thursday-Saturday.
The three-day championships begin Thursday at the Track at Tucker Stadium on the campus of Tennessee Tech. Competition will get underway at 1 p.m. with the decathlon and heptathlon events.
SIUE Head Coach Scott Block said his team is feeling good going into the championships.
"We have a lot of strong areas going into this weekend," added Block. "We have multiple athletes in the top four of each event and we are looking to have a very successful meet."
At the Championships, you are allowed four athletes in each event and Block said they will try and maximize that with his team.
"We're looking to fill out a lot of events at the championships," said Block. "We have a lot of experienced athletes who have had great results in multiple events."
Coach Block added that his seniors are gearing up for the championships and believed they will make an impact.
"A lot of seniors are looking to have a breakout meets" added Block. "I expect big things out of this group who have led us on and off the track this season."
SIUE senior runners include Tyler Owens who has the fifth-fastest men's 10,000m time (32:12.23) in the OVC this season. Haley Miller owns the fourth-fastest women's 3000m steeplechase time (11:13.35) and the eleventh-best 5000m time (17:37.44) in the OVC.
The senior Cougar jumpers are looking to continue their success this season. Julian Harvey is first in the men's long jump (25 feet, 4 inches), second in the high jump (6-11.5), fourth in the triple jump (49-7) and sixth in the 100m (10.73) in conference this season. Brittney Gibbs heads into the championships second in the conference in the women's triple jump (41-1.75).
The SIUE senior throwers have had tremendous years thus far. Martinus Mitchell is first in the men's shot put (59-8.25) and the discus (177-10) in the OVC. Lizzie Virgl sits on top of the OVC list in the women's hammer throw (186-0).
