EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – The SIUE track and field teams are set to compete in the Redbird Invite in Normal, Illinois, Saturday. The meet will take place at the Redbird Track Complex on the campus of Illinois State University.
The meet will include top NCAA Division I talent from across the Midwest, with Butler, Dayton, Valparaiso and Western Illinois set to compete.
SIUE Head Coach Scott Block is excited about this weekend and thinks his team is hitting its stride at the perfect time.
"We are looking forward to some great mid-April performances this weekend," said Block. "The outdoor season is now in full swing and the training has been going fantastic, so great performances are inevitable."
Many SIUE track and field athletes have had impressive performances this season, below are a list of highlights from the season thus far.
- Nichyria Byrd broke the SIUE women's long jump school record at the Joey Haines Invite March 30. Byrd's mark of 19 feet, 11.5 inches is tops in the Ohio Valley Conference this season.
- Freshmen DeVonte Tincher has had an impressive season in multiple events. Tincher has the second fastest 100m (10.74 seconds) and 200m time (21.64) in the OVC this season.
- Lizzie Virgl owns the top mark in the OVC this season in the women's throw (182-10).
- Julian Harvey has had yet another successful season for the Cougars. Harvey has the furthest long jump in the OVC this season (24-7.75), which he set at the Bill Cornell Classic March 23-24.
