EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – The SIUE track and field teams open up their outdoor season Friday and Saturday at the Coastal Carolina Invitational in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

The meet begins Friday at 9 a.m. CT with the field events. The event continues Saturday with the start of the track events at 10:30 a.m. CT.

"This trip gives the team the opportunity to train in nice weather, and more importantly, share a great experience with their teammates," SIUE Head Coach Scott Block said. "The week of training culminates with the first outdoor competition where the athletes will get reacquainted with the hammer, discus, javelin and a 400m track."

The Cougars look to continue their success after having a solid indoor season and impressive Ohio Valley Conference Indoor Championships meet.

John Barnes was champion in the men's weight throw (61-8.5) at the OVC Championships. Nichyria Byrdtook home first in the women's long jump at the OVC Championships.

During the indoor season, the men's distance medley relay team (Matt O'ConnorDalton OakesKevin Campbell and Landon Skelly) broke the SIUE school record (10:10.13). Lizzie Virgl set the school record (58-5.25) in the women's weight throw at the OVC Championships while finishing second.

Martinus Mitchell and O'Connor won OVC Athlete of the Week honors for their performances at the Marshall Invite Feb. 9. Mitchell threw a personal record and second furthest shot put in SIUE history with a mark of 55-9.25. O'Connor placed first in the 4x400m relay (3:20.81), DMR and second in the 800m (1:51.86).

The Cougars will have seniors Alec Dutton and Julian Harvey for the outdoor season after they both sat out for SIUE during the indoor season.

Harvey holds the outdoor school records in the long, triple and high jumps. Harvey has also been named an All-American and qualified for NCAA preliminaries in two of his three outdoor seasons.

"It will be great to have Julian return for his final season of eligibility," Assistant Coach Joey Pacione said. "He brings so much to our team."
