EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – The SIUE women's tennis team fell to Jacksonville State 6-1 in its Ohio Valley Conference opening match. The Cougars drop to 5-7 and 0-1 in the OVC, while the Gamecocks improve to 9-2 and 2-0 in conference play.
"Give a lot of credit to Jacksonville State. We knew coming in that they were one of the top team in the conference, so we knew we had to play well," SIUE Head Coach Adam Albertsen said. "We had good energy and a lot of good battles and second sets today."
The Cougars dropped the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles matches to drop the point. The No. 2 doubles match went unfinished with SIUE's Callaghan Adams and Maria Thibault tied 5-5 against JSU's Elena Tendero and Harriet Hamilton.
Lara Tupper won the lone point of the day for SIUE in No. 2 singles, where she defeated Alessia Locati, 7-6, 5-0. Tupper improves to 6-3 in No. 2 singles on the year.
In No. 1 singles, SIUE's Alina Munteanu took the match to a third set tiebreaker, before falling to Hamilton 6-1, 2-6, 10-6.
"Transitioning to outdoors, we played a lot better than we did last week," Albertsen added. "We will flip the switch quick with Eastern Illinois coming up Tuesday, so we are excited for the next OVC battle and get out and build off this match."
The Cougars will play host to Eastern Illinois Tuesday. First serve is set for 3 p.m. at the SIUE Tennis Courts.
