Strong Singles Play Lifts Cougars Past Tigers

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The SIUE women's tennis team defeated Savannah State 5-2 Wednesday. The Cougars won five singles matches to improve to 5-7 on the season, Savannah State dropped to 0-8.

"The team played very well in singles today," SIUE Head Coach Adam Albertsen said. "We dug a hole after doubles but came back with tremendous fight."

In doubles play, the Cougars dropped both matches to concede the point to the Tigers.

The Cougars came back strong in singles play to win five points to secure the win.

SIUE's Alina Munteanu won the No. 1 singles match over Sofia Shutko, 6-3, 6-0. Munteanu is now 7-3 on the season in No. 1 singles play.

In No. 2 singles, Lara Tupper won the match for the Cougars over Muskaan Ranjan, 7-6, 4-0.

SIUE's Callaghan Adams (No. 3), Ann-Christine Link (No. 4) and Maria Thibault (No. 5) also won their singles matches.

Today's match against the Tigers wrapped up a southeast three-match road swing for SIUE.

"I'm very proud of how this team came together and finished the week with a win," added Albertsen.

The Cougars will open up their 2019 Ohio Valley Conference campaign March 23 against Jacksonville State and March 26 against Eastern Illinois, both at home.
