EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – The SIUE women's tennis team fell 4-3 against Missouri State Sunday at the Edwardsville Y. SIUE's Alina Munteanu improves to 3-0 in No. 1 singles this season.

"It was a really good weekend for our team," SIUE Head Coach Adam Albertsen said. "We did a lot of good things, especially in doubles play, and I liked seeing our game advance from game to game."

SIUE falls to 2-1 on the year while the Bears improve to 1-0.

"This was a very tough team we played today," Albertsen added. They won the MVC Tournament and advanced to the National Tournament, so having them on the ropes and playing them tight was a great experience for this team."

The Cougars won the doubles point with wins in the No. 2 and No. 3 matches. In No. 2 doubles, SIUE's Callaghan Adams and Maria Thibault defeated Phoebe Boeschen and Fati Khamissi of Missouri State, 6-4. In No. 3 doubles, SIUE's Nicole Gomez and Munteanu defeated Alye Darter and Mara Presot 7-5.

In singles play, SIUE's No. 1 Munteanu defeated Missouri State's Alye Darter, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1. Munteanu is now 3-0 in singles play for the Cougars.

"She's a bulldog," Albertsen said about Munteanu's early season success. "She loves to fight for every point and match. She started out a little slow today, but she settled in and found her comfort zone and she took away the opponents weapons."

The Cougars also won the No. 3 singles match with Gomez defeating Khamissi, 6-4, 7-5.

SIUE will be back in action with a two-match road swing at Drake Feb. 2 and Northern Illinois Feb. 3.
