Cougars Blank Western Illinois, Improve to 2-0

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – The SIUE women's tennis team defeated Western Illinois 4-0 at the Edwardsville Y Saturday, with the Cougars only dropping one set on the day.

"I really liked how we came out in doubles today at all three pairings," SIUE Head Coach Adam Albertsen said. "We were able to attack more and really gained the momentum going into singles play."

The Cougars (2-0) swept doubles play against the Leathernecks. SIUE's No. 1 singles pairing Lara Tupper and Ann-Christine Link defeated Mia Melnizki and Anouk Maajong of WIU, 6-2. In the No. 2 doubles spot for SIUE, Maria Thibault and Callaghan Adams defeated Ana Bjelica and Mary Bjelica, 6-2. In the No. 3 doubles match, SIUE's Alina Munteanu and Nicole Gomez took down Laura Ballesteros and Megan Tagaloa, 6-0.

In singles play, SIUE's No. 1 Munteanu defeated Melnizki, 6-0, 6-2. The Cougars also took the No. 3 singles match with Gomez defeating Maajong, 6-2, 6-1, and the No. 5 match where SIUE's Adams defeated Ballesteros 6-1, 6-2.

The No. 2 and No. 4 singles matches were unfinished. The No. 2 match was between SIUE's Tupper and A. Bjelica, ending, 2-6, 6-1. In No. 4 singles, SIUE's Raillane Kamdem was up, 6-3, 6-1, against M. Bjelica.

The Cougars will look to make it three wins in a row Sunday as they play host to the reigning Missouri Valley Conference Tournament Champions Missouri State. First serve is set for 11 a.m. at the Edwardsville Y.
