SIUE Tennis Opens Season with Win at Chicago State

HOMEWOOD, Ill. – The SIUE women's tennis team opened their season with a 4-3 win at Chicago State Monday. Alina Munteanu, Ann-Christine Link, Callaghan Adams and Lara Tupper all picked up singles wins for the Cougars.

"This was a great team win to start off the year," said SIUE first year Head Coach Adam Albertsen. "Our four upperclassmen Alina, Ann, Callaghan and Lara picked up huge wins and showed great leadership today."

In doubles play, SIUE's No. 1 Tupper and Link defeated Anastasiia Goncharov and Djana Borodina, 6-2. The Cougars dropped the No. 2 doubles match where the SIUE duo of Maria Thibault and Adams fell to Kristina Pukhaeva and Katarina Drazic, 7-6. In No. 3 doubles, Chicago State's Lesha Shephard and Andjela Dejanovic, defeated SIUE newcomers Munteanu and Nicole Gomez, 6-3.

"I am very proud of this group," added Albertsen. "After losing the doubles point we really came out with great fight at all six singles spots."

Going into singles play, Munteanu defeated Drazic, 1-6, 6-3, 6-2, in No. 1 singles. In the No. 2 singels spot, Tupper defeated Pukhaeva 3-6, 6-4, 7-5. SIUE's Adams defeated Kuzminskaya 6-2, 6-3 in the five spot and Link defeated Dejanovic 6-0, 7-5 in No. 6 singles.

SIUE (1-0) will be back in action Saturday against Western Illinois and Sunday against Missouri State. Both matches are set to be played at the Edwardsville Y.
