EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – The SIUE women's tennis team fell to Southeast Missouri 6-1 at the Edwardsville YMCA Saturday to wrap up the 2018 season.
The Cougars dropped to 0-20 overall and 0-9 in Ohio Valley Conference play. The Redhawks improved to 5-13 and 2-7 in OVC play.
SIUE earned their lone point in singles play when Ann-Christine Link defeated Isabella Krupa (SEMO) 6-4, 6-3, in the No. 3 match. In No. 2 singles, Kseniya Zonova of Southeast Missouri defeated SIUE's Raillane Kamdem in three sets 1-6, 6-1, 10-1.
The No. 1 doubles match between Kamdem / Link and Zonova / Doroshenko (SEMO) was stopped at 5-5 when the Cougars fell in the No. 2 match.
SIUE Head Coach Nick Mueller talked about his team's tough circumstances this season and how they positively responded.
"I'm extremely proud of this team," said Mueller. "We have faced a lot of adversity this year and instead of griping about it, they became resilient. Losing 4-3 to UT Martin Friday showed we can hang with an OVC tournament team. The last two days have been very rewarding as a coach."
"I can't thank Katherine, Anna and Angel enough for what they have sacrificed to help this team," added Mueller.
Lara Tupper, who spent the whole season at the No. 1 singles spot for the Cougars, will be a junior next year. She won five matches at her No. 1 spot, which was tied for the most wins for SIUE this season in singles play.
Freshmen Kamdem won three matches in No. 2 singles and two in the No. 3 spot this season, tying her with Tupper for most wins in singles play for SIUE.
"This core group will come back next fall with a new outlook," said Mueller. "We will no doubt be a force in the OVC next year."
