EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – SIUE women's tennis starts its 2016 campaign with a road trip to Columbia, Missouri, for two matches.
The first match is Saturday at 5 p.m. against host Missouri. The second match is Sunday at 11 a.m. against Bradley.
"With a lot of returning veterans from last year's squad, it makes the transition from fall to spring that much smoother," said Head Coach Nick Mueller. "Our freshman came back to campus ready to go on day one of spring practices, so that was nice to see. Most of them pushed the reset button and recharged during Christmas break."
The fall season was a successful one as four Cougars tallied winning records. Those players were returning 2015 first team All-Conference selections Lexi Aranda and Mia Frogner and freshmen Madeline Hill and Morgan Steffes.
"We had a number of players have great individual fall semesters, both on the court and in the classroom," said Mueller. "Our freshmen really stepped up and did some great things. The freshman now have a better understanding of what college tennis is all about, and the upperclassmen can help lead them through the spring semester."
While the upcoming matches are on the nonconference schedule, Mueller says his team has begun preparing for the Ohio Valley Conference season.
"They have come back to campus hungry, and they want to challenge for an OVC championship," said Mueller. "We have had great leadership from day one in the fall, and it started with our team captains McKenzie Thomas and Mia Frogner. This team has a goal in mind, and this coming weekend will be our first test. The team is excited to compete."
