MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Mia Frogner and Morgan Steffes completed an undefeated singles record on the weekend, claiming flight victories at the Minnesota Gopher Invitational.
Frogner won five straight matches over the weekend, beginning with a victory over Kemper of Northern Iowa and Toledo of Iowa State. During day two, she overcame Grambeau of Big Ten opponent Wisconsin, winning 6-1, 6-4. She then went on to defeat Merzbacher and Emme, both from host Minnesota.
Frogner won her first four matches in straight sets and her championship match in a super tiebreaker to win Flight B.
Morgan Steffes won her match to claim the Flight C championship over a Wisconsin-Milwaukee opponent. Her undefeated weekend began with a win over Nelson of Air Force and Montgomerie of Northern Iowa. Steffes completed two wins during the second day of the tournament over opponents from Wisconsin and Air Force.
During the course of the tournament, the Cougars finished singles play with an overall record of 26-14. On the last day of the tournament, SIUE was perfect in singles play at 7-0.
SIUE continues the fall season with a single-day tournament at SIU Carbondale Oct. 10.
"What a fantastic finish to this three-day tournament," said Head Coach Nick Mueller. "It is a major accomplishment for both Mia and Morgan to win their flights. Playing six doubles matches and five singles matches in three days is a test of the body and the mind. I'm very proud of our team, and we look forward to competing again on October 10 in Carbondale."
