EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – SIUE women's tennis will put its three-match winning streak on the line Thursday in a makeup match against Eastern Illinois.
The Ohio Valley Conference dual match will be played at the Atkins Tennis Center in Champaign, Ill., at 1 p.m. SIUE, 9-8 overall and 4-3 in OVC play, faces a Panthers team that is 3-4 in the OVC and 9-4 overall.
"Beginning on Thursday, our team is going to get a taste of what it's like to be playing for a postseason berth," said SIUE Head Coach Jason Coomer. "Our success is dependent upon our tenacity on the court."
The Cougars have three matches scheduled over the next four days. SIUE closes out the regular season with a pair of home matches Saturday and Sunday against Belmont (3-9 overall and 1-6 OVC) and Tennessee State (0-13 overall and 0-8 OVC), respectively. Saturday's match begins at 10 a.m. Sunday's dual starts at 11 a.m.
"Having three matches in four days to close out the regular season would be a challenge for any team," said Coomer. "We feel we are playing as well as we have played this year, which is what you want when you come to the end of the regular season."
SIUE is hoping to qualify for the six-team OVC Tournament which begins April 17th in Paducah, Ky. It would be SIUE's first-ever appearance in the league tournament.
"Our league does not give you the luxury of looking beyond anybody," said Coomer. "With the parity I have mentioned before, you cannot take anything for granted when it comes to conference play. I am confident our team understands this and will focus on one match at a time."
