CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – SIUE used a balanced attack Sunday as the Cougars earned a road victory over Austin Peay in women's college tennis action.
SIUE, 7-8 overall and 2-3 in the Ohio Valley Conference, defeated the Lady Govs 5-2. Austin Peay fell to 5-10 overall and 2-4 in the OVC.
"We had contributions throughout the lineup today," said SIUE Head Coach Jason Coomer. "It was good to see our team bounce back and collect another conference win."
SIUE opened the match by taking two doubles matches. SIUE's Haley Ilcewicz and Lexi Aranda won their No. 2 doubles match with an 8-3 triumph over Jovana Karac and Isabela Jovanovic. At No. 3 doubles, Mia Frogner and Kali Donner gave the Cougars an 8-4 win over Vanessa Tavares and Hannah Tatlock.
Coomer said Frogner and Donner carried the momentum from their doubles match into their respective singles matches.
"Both did a good job of setting the tone early," said Coomer.
Frogner defeated Tavares at No. 3 singles 6-3, 6-2. Donner dismissed Karac 6-0, 6-3 at No. singles.
McKenzie Thomas made her first appearance in an OVC match this season at No. 6 singles. Her 6-4, 6-7, 10-8 victory over Jovanovic boosted the Cougars.
"McKenzie battled until the end today," said Coomer. "She came up with big shots at the right moments and played the big points very well."
Aranda also picked up her second singles victory in as many days, defeating Andra Cornea 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles.
"Lexi finished off a great weekend with two singles wins," said Coomer. "She controlled the match from the beginning and never looked back."
SIUE has three matches on the schedule for the upcoming week. It begins with a 1 p.m. matchup Thursday at Eastern Illinois.
"Today was a good day for our women," said Coomer. "We are looking forward to getting back on the court next week beginning with Eastern Illinois. We expect a tough match but will be prepared."
