ST. LOUIS, Mo. – SIUE women's tennis was crowned champions of five singles flights and one doubles flight at this weekend's Billiken Classic.
"This weekend was a good first test for our new players and a good opportunity for our returners to get back into their routine on the court," said SIUE Head Coach Jason Coomer.
SIUE rolled out a 14-4 record in singles matches Friday and Saturday over Saint Louis, Missouri-St. Louis, and Lewis at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center.
"We had a number of good performances and were fortunate to be on the winning end more often than not this weekend," said Coomer. "Obviously 5 of 7 (flight winners) is a great start for the year and is a credit to how hard the women have worked these first few weeks of practice."
Frogner was the lone Cougar to earn three singles victories. The Cougar freshman won her first collegiate match over Maria Toro, of Saint Louis, 6-1, 4-6, 10-5. Aranda, also a freshman, bested Saint Louis' Aspen Cervin in her first collegiate action 6-4, 6-4.
"It's always nice to see the freshmen get their first collegiate victories," Coomer said.
Next up for the Cougars is the SIUE Fall Invitational Sept. 20-22.
"While we had a good weekend on the court, we can enjoy this for now, but we need to turn our attention to our own tournament. Players will have to improve if they want to compete at the level they know they can reach."
