EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Murray State scored early in both games of the doubleheader to defeat SIUE softball at Cougar Field.
The Racers downed the Cougars 5-2 and 8-2 to improve to 26-25 overall and 16-6 in Ohio Valley Conference play.
The Cougars, which conclude the regular season tomorrow, can earn a spot in next week's OVC Tournament in Oxford, Alabama, with a doubleheader sweep Sunday against Austin Peay. Game time is 1 p.m. for the doubleheader. SIUE stands at 15-26 overall and 7-13 in the OVC.
Zoe Schafer was a bright spot offensively for the Cougars with three hits for the day, including her team-leading seventh home run of the season.
"She is making adjustments at the plate," said SIUE Interim Head Coach Jessica Jones. "She's a coachable kid and puts the time in. She puts the time in and it pays off."
The Cougars also picked up a home run in game two from freshman Sammie Ofoia, a sixth-inning solo blast over the left field fence.
Jones also lauded the play of junior Abby Marlow, who started the day in left field and eventually moved to third base.
"Abby Is an athlete," said Jones. "She literally is the definition of a utility player. She has quick reactions. She knows the game and understands the game. She understands when we need to make big plays, and she has the competitive effort to do it."
Murray State moved up in the standings with its two wins, scoring in two of the first three innings of game one and then pieced together a seven-run first inning of game two.
