OXFORD, Ala. – Eastern Illinois gained momentum after an early pitcher's duel to defeat SIUE 8-0 in five innings at the Ohio Valley Conference Softball Championships at Choccolocco Park.
SIUE concluded the OVC Tournament with a 25-21 record. Eastern Illinois, 36-19, moves on in the consolation bracket to play the winner of Morehead State and Austin Peay.
After the game, SIUE first baseman Zoe Schafer who had three hits yesterday, including her team-leading ninth home run of the season, was named to the All-Tournament team.
SIUE Head Coach Sandy Montgomery reflected on the Friday's loss and the season.
"We didn't pitch well, and we didn't hit well. It just wasn't our day," said Montgomery. "I want to thank our seniors. They are a great group, and we appreciate everything they have done for us."
Jessica Wireman, 17-11, collected the win for the Panthers. Corrina Rivas, 7-9, took the loss for the Cougars.
EIU's offense stepped up for two runs in the fourth inning and six more in the top of the fifth. Kayla Bear, Megan Burton and Maria Devito each had two RBIs for the Panthers.
SIUE finished with two hits on the game with Conner Cutright having both of them.
