EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – SIUE softball has its first home contests for the month of April with two games Tuesday against Ohio Valley Conference rival Eastern Illinois and a nonconference battle Wednesday against Saint Louis.
Tuesday's doubleheader against the Panthers is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. Wednesday's single game against the Billikens is set for 4 p.m.
"I think the kids are trying to move forward," said SIUE Head Coach Sandy Montgomery. "We just have to get it together in all phases, and if we do that we'll win ball games."
The Cougars enter the week with a 15-13 record and a 5-3 mark in OVC.
"We're sitting in a good position still," noted Montgomery. "We just have to put things together on the same day."
SIUE first baseman Zoe Schafer is ranked third in the OVC in hitting with a .411 batting average. The redshirt sophomore also holds the league's top on-base percentage at .550.
Sophomore pitcher Emily Ingles leads the Cougars with a 10-6 record. She is sixth in the OVC in earned run average at 2.08.
SIUE faces an Eastern Illinois squad which leads the OVC in offense with a .282 batting average. Freshman Haley Mitchell leads the Panthers with a .438 batting average.
The EIU pitching duo of Jessica Wireman and Michelle Rogers have 13 wins each. The Panthers are 28-9 overall with a 7-1 record in league play.
With two conference games Tuesday and four more coming this weekend for the Cougars, SIUE will have to play the one-game-at-a-time position as it aims for a top spot for next month's OVC Championships.
"I think they understand how important every game is," said Montgomery.
Saint Louis enters the week with a 21-20 record after having lost its last four contests, including two in Atlantic 10 Conference play at UMass.
Sadie Wise is the team's top hitting with a .388 batting average, including a team-leading 14 home runs. SLU's pitching staff has a combined ERA of 3.82.
Wednesday's game vs. SLU also will be free admission. The first 100 fans to attend will receive a Code Red T-shirt.
