EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – With the spring weather throwing chaos into the SIUE softball schedule, the SIUE softball team is looking to turn the corner.
The Cougars, 14-11, head north to Peoria, Illinois, to take on the Bradley Braves for a 4 p.m. contest. The Braves, 15-19, play at Petersen Hotels Field at the Louisville Slugger Sports Complex, an all-turf facility.
"Luckily for us, we have a turf indoor field that we can take a few ground balls on," said SIUE Head Coach Sandy Montgomery. "We haven't been outside a lot. Yesterday was our first day on the field in some time."
SIUE has yet to play a game in the month of April and has continued to shuffle its schedule. SIUE softball announced three changes to its 2018 Ohio Valley Conference home schedule.
The cancelled doubleheaders from this past weekend against Morehead State and Eastern Kentucky have been moved to the first weekend in May. The Cougars face off against Morehead State on Saturday, May 5, beginning at 2:30 p.m. The Cougars will play Eastern Kentucky on Sunday, May 6, at 1 p.m.
To accommodate that change, SIUE and Eastern Illinois have agreed to move their scheduled doubleheader to this Sunday beginning at 1 p.m.
"It's been very frustrating this season not having any continuity of play," said Montgomery. "That's part of being an outdoor sport. You have to be strong enough and mentally tough enough to overcome the adversity."
The Cougars hold a .275 batting average as a team. The pitching staff has a 2.63 earned run average with a better than two-to-one strikeout-to-walk ratio.
Montgomery said she is glad the Cougars have an opportunity to play a midweek game before returning to OVC play.
"Who wants to practice in April?" noted Montgomery. "I told the team that the other day. I don't want to practice either, but we have to stay sharp somehow. They have responded well, and we're looking forward to getting on the field."
