MOREHEAD, Ky. – SIUE softball swept its second doubleheader in as many days Sunday with a pair of Ohio Valley Conference victories at Morehead State.
The Cougars defeated the Eagles 4-0 in the opener and 2-1 in the nightcap. SIUE improved its season record to 32-7 with an 8-2 mark in OVC play. Morehead State dropped to 20-16 overall and 3-7 in the OVC.
Extra-base hits in both games were the difference on offense for the Cougars.
"We came up with the hits when we needed them," said SIUE Head Coach Sandy Montgomery.
Lopesilvero, a senior shortstop, said she played well despite not having the best warmup.
"Coach (Jessica) Jones told me you have to learn to be quick (with the bat) even when you're not quick," Lopesilvero said.
In the nightcap, Reagan Curtis delivered RBI doubles in the fourth and sixth innings. Curtis' RBI in the fourth was down the line in left, scoring pinch runner Jane Smith from first base. Her RBI in the sixth scored Heren with two outs after Heren had singled and stole second.
SIUE's pitching allowed just one run all day.
Haley Chambers-Book recorded her eight shutout of the season and completed the week without yielding a single run. She was 4-0 for the week after tossing a four-hit shutout in the opener. Ashley Koziol gave up five hits in the second game while improving her season record to 5-0.
It was Koziol's first start of the OVC season. She earned the Sunday start after posting three scoreless innings Saturday at Eastern Kentucky.
"We knew how important it was to make the plays behind her," said Lopesilvero.
"I thought Koziol had a nice outing," added Montgomery.
The Cougars, winners of five straight games, have one more game on this road swing with a single game Wednesday at Illinois. Game time is 5 p.m. SIUE returns home to Cougar Field next weekend with a Friday doubleheader against Southeast Missouri.
