EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – SIUE softball plans a 4 p.m. start Tuesday for a nonconference matchup against the Bradley Braves at Cougar Field.
SIUE enters the contest with a 27-7 record while Bradley holds an 18-17 record.
The Cougars won two of three games last week with shutouts against SIU Carbondale and UT Martin. The weekend ended with a 7-3 loss to UT Martin.
"You have to be able to handle the adversity of the game, and that's something we have to work on," said SIUE Head Coach Sandy Montgomery.
SIUE's pitching staff continues to put up strong numbers. Haley Chambers-Book is coming off her second straight week as the Ohio Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week as she tossed two shutouts and took a no-hitter into the seventh inning against UT Martin.
As a team, SIUE leads the OVC in earned run average (1.90) and fielding percentage (.979). The pitching staff of Chambers-Book, Emily Ingles and Ashley Koziol have combined for 309 strikeouts in 232 1/3 innings pitched.
Senior Allison Smiley leads the SIUE offense with 28 runs batted in and is second in batting average at .341. Redshirt freshman Zoe Schafer is tops in batting average for the Cougars at .379. Sophomore Alyssa Heren leads SIUE in home runs (4) and stolen bases (16) while batting .337.
Kelly Kapp enters the game as Bradley's top hitter with a .467 batting average. In 35 games this season, she already has broken the Bradley record for single-season steals with 38. She is fourth nationally in stolen bases per game (1.09) and fifth in hits (56).
Caitlyn McCarron is second on the squad with a .451 batting average that includes 20 extra-base hits.
"They have some kids who are swinging the bat, and they always come to play," said Montgomery. "When you add power and speed on a team, it's always a challenge."
