EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – SIUE softball has four games slated for this weekend's fall play with two contests at Illinois Saturday and two more at home Sunday.
The Cougars, who are fresh off two wins last weekend against Parkland and Saint Louis, travel to Champaign, Illinois, Saturday for a 10 a.m. game against Danville and a 12:30 p.m. contest at Illinois. On Sunday, SIUE returns to Cougar Field for a 1 p.m. doubleheader against Jefferson.
"We played fairly decent last weekend and had good pitching, but we're going to have to step it up at Illinois," said SIUE Head Coach Sandy Montgomery.
The Cougars have modest goals going into the weekend.
"We just want to come out and played error-free ball and swing the bats well," said Montgomery. "We need to hit the ball a little bit better than we did last weekend."
The pitching staff will be challenged with double the games than last weekend.
"We have four quality pitchers," said Montgomery. "I've always been a firm believer that pitchers need to pitch to be sharp so we'll see what happens Saturday. I haven't decided who is going to start what game, but I want to see all of them throw and how they do against quality teams."
Opportunities for field players to start will come from practicing strong, but Montgomery is confident her team will peak at the right team.
"They are a good group," she added. "We have great drive to be good, and that's half the battle."
