EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville softball team improved to 36-10 Thursday with a 5-1 victory over the Bradley Braves.
The Cougars used timely hits to score in four different innings. Bradley, 16-23, was handcuffed by SIUE hurler Kaitlin Colosimo, who improved to 17-4 for the season.
Colosimo struck out four and gave up four hits. Bradley scored its only run in the sixth inning when Alycia Bachkora homered to left center field for her sixth home run of the season.
SIUE was firmly in control after scoring twice in the second inning. Lindsay Longfellow opening the inning by drawing a walk off Bradley starter Amanda Clack, 3-6. Whitney Davis then recorded her 19th RBI of the season with a double over the head of BU right fielder Katy Dammer. Amanda Pucel followed with a single to right field that drove home Davis.
The Cougars added runs in the third and the fifth with RBIs from Lindsay Longfellow and Lauren Zembruski. Chaleen Rumpf launched a solo home run to left field, capping the scoring in the sixth. Rumpf's fourth home run of the season came off Bradley reliever Ashley Birdsong.
SIUE is now idle until next Tuesday when it begins its final week of the season. The Cougars play Central Arkansas in a 3 p.m. doubleheader. The season finale is scheduled for next Wednesday, a 5 p.m. twi-night doubleheader with Saint Louis University. All four games will be played at Cougar Field.
