ROMEOVILLE, ILL. - With a burst of offensive power, the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville softball team crushed Grand Valley State 10-1 in five innings for the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional Championship.
It was the second straight Regional Championship for the Cougars, who won last season on its own campus. This time at Lewis Softball Field, the Cougars swept through the tournament with four consecutive victories.
SIUE, 45-8, has now won 12 straight games and 21 of its last 22 headed into the national finals, which begin Thursday at Firestone Stadium in Akron, Ohio. The Cougars will be paired in the first round of the national tournament against Florida Southern, which won the South Region with a 3-0 victory Sunday over Florida Gulf Coast. Florida Southern is 49-13 overall.
Five SIUE players were named to the All-Tournament team, including Kaitlin Colosimo as the Most Outstanding Player of the tournament. Colosimo won twice and threw a no-hitter against Wayne State.
Her five-inning victory over Grand Valley State pushed her record to 26-3. She allowed just three hits to the Lakers.
Colosimo was joined on the All-Tournament team by outfielders Jodie Ohlau and Courtney Mall, catcher Libby Lenart and shortstop Kaeleigh Rousey.
SIUE scored six runs in the first inning and one more in the second, but it was a three-run home run in the top of the fifth inning that put the Cougars over the top. The eight-run rule was in effect for the Cougars.
