ROMEOVILLE, ILL. -- Southern Illinois University Edwardsville softball got off to good start Thursday at the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional Championships with a 3-0 victory over Shepherd.
Ashley Price was the offensive star for the Cougars with an RBI single in the first inning and a two-out solo home run over the left field fence in the third inning. Price was a perfect at the plate, managing three of SIUE's seven hits.
SIUE hurler Sabra McCune tossed a five-hit shutout to improve her season record to 16-5. SIUE, now ranked No. 5 nationally in the latest NFCA/NCAA Division II coaches poll, improved to 42-8 overall while Shepherd fell to 31-18.
Shepherd had its offensive chances against the Cougars, stranding multiple runners in the third, fourth and fifth innings. McCune struck out eight Shepherd batters and left seven opponents stranded.
SIUE led 2-0 in fifth on Price's RBIs when Courtney Mall doubled home pinch runner Carly Wildenradt from second, accounting for SIUE's third run.
The Cougars now move on to play Wayne State in the tournament's winner's bracket. Wayne State was a come-from-behind winner over Grand Valley State 3-2 in 10 innings. Wayne State pitcher Molly Yetman shook off a pair of GVSU solo home runs for the win.
Game time Friday is 2 p.m. at the Lewis Softball Field and can be heard live on SIUE's Web Radio at http://www.siue.edu/WEBRADIO/. The regional tournament is an eight-team, double-elimination championship with the winner advancing to the national finals at Firestone Stadium in Akron, Ohio, next week.
