EDWARDSVILLE, ILL. -- The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville softball seniors were honored Sunday for their final home games, a doubleheader sweep over Saint Joseph's Sunday at Cougar Field.
The 12th-ranked Cougars moved to 37-8 overall and 19-5 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. SIUE tied Lewis for the best record in the league but will be the No. 2 seed for the GLVC Tournament next week in East Peoria, Ill., due to head-to-head competition.
SIUE will face Saint Joseph's, the No. 7 seed after Sunday's action, in the opening round of the GLVC Tournament Friday at noon. The complete standings are available at available at http://www.glvcsports.com.
On Sunday, SIUE closed out the home field campaign with a 16-0 record by defeating Saint Joseph's 5-0 and 9-1 in six innings.
Sabra McCune tossed a two-hitter in game one after holding a perfect game into the sixth inning. She struck out six and outdueled SJC's Sara Somgyi, who struck out nine but allowed five runs.
Lauren Zembruski proved the only run SIUE needed in the third inning with a sacrifice fly, scoring Nicole Beecher who reached on a double and went to third on a stolen base. Zembruski fired away again in the fifth, tripling home Katy Biggs. Zembruski later scored when a Jodie Ohlau pop-up was misplayed by SJC second baseman Kara Kristoff.
In game two, SJC and SIUE played four scoreless innings before the Cougars erupted for four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Courtney Mall highlighted the inning with a two-run triple. Mall later gave SIUE the game-winning hit with an RBI single to score Ohlau, which gave SIUE enough runs for the eight-run rule.
