EDWARDSVILLE, ILL - The No. 13-ranked Southern Illinois University Edwardsville softball team swept its second doubleheader in as many days with wins over Northern Kentucky University.
SIUE defeated NKU 4-3 in eight innings and 10-1 in five innings. The two wins increased SIUE's overall record to 28-7 and 10-4 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. NKU dropped to 20-18 overall and 5-7 in the GLVC.
SIUE led the first game 1-0 until NKU struck back with two in the fourth and another run in the sixth. The Cougars tied the game in the bottom of the seventh with Chaleen Rumpf, who pinch ran for Sabra McCune after her double, stole home on a failed pickoff attempt. Then Katy Biggs scored on an error by the NKU catcher Jenny Weis.
With the bases loaded in the eighth, Ashley Price drove home Nicole Beecher from third to give SIUE the 4-3 win. Price hit the ball to NKU third baseman Rose Broderick, who misplayed the ball and was unable to make a play.
Kaitlin Colosimo picked up the win in relief and later earned a complete game victory in the nightcap. She is now 15-2 this season.
SIUE led the second game 1-0 until the fourth when Sydney Doyle singled home Jessica Feldhaus. The Cougars took the lead in the bottom of the fourth when Rumpf, pinch-running in game two, stole third and scored on an error by the catcher. With two outs in the inning, Price doubled to short left field as a pair of NKU players collided. NKU shortstop Rose Broderick was injured on the play. After more than 20 minutes to tend to her injury, SIUE rallied for five more two-out runs to take a 7-1 lead after four innings.
In the fifth, McCune reached on an infield error that allowed her to get to second. Price followed with her second double of the game. Beecher ended the game with a two-run blast to right field that hit the SIUE scoreboard.
SIUE hits the field Tuesday in a doubleheader against Southern Indiana at 2 p.m. at Cougar Field.
