Top-seeded Southern Illinois University Edwardsville advanced in the winner's bracket of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament Friday with wins over UW-Parkside and Missouri-Rolla.
SIUE, ranked No. 4 in the nation in the NFCA/NCAA Division II Poll, blanked UW-Parkside 3-0 and defeated UM-Rolla 3-1. The Cougars improved their season record to 44-8 and will next play Lewis at 3 p.m. Saturday. Lewis, the No. 3 seed in the GLVC Tournament, defeated second-seeded Southern Indiana 7-6 in the other winner's bracket battle.
Sabra McCune improved her season record to 25-6 with a pair of pitching victories. She threw her sixth complete-game shutout in game one and was one out away from a second shutout before UM-Rolla's Emily Tucker hit a home run in the seventh inning.
Tucker's home run was the only blemish of the day for the Cougars. SIUE jumped out to leads in both games and never looked back.
Emily Lenart blasted a two-run home run in game one, lifting the Cougar offense with her fourth home run of the season.
In game two, SIUE's Alicia DeShasier went 3 for 3, including an RBI double in the sixth inning. Libby Lenart recorded a sacrifice fly in the first inning. Holly Neuerburg scored the Cougars' run in the third inning when she stole third base and scored on a throwing error by UM-Rolla catcher Ashley Weiss.
