EDWARDSVILLE, ILL. -- Kaitlin Colosimo tossed a four-hit shutout in the nightcap as Southern Illinois University Edwardsville softball swept Missouri-Rolla 3-2 and 5-0 on Saturday at Cougar Field.
SIUE improved to 23-3 overall and extended its winning streak to 20 games. Missouri-Rolla is now 19-3 and 2-2 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play. The Miners had their 15-game winning streak halted in game one.
The Cougars, ranked No. 5 in the nation in the latest National Fastpitch Coaches Association poll, face Rockhurst in a GLVC doubleheader Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
In game one, SIUE jumped out on top 1-0 in the first inning as Shanna Waldo reached on an error and later scored on a fielder's choice by Libby Lenart.
SIUE held the lead until the fifth when Holly Wieberg doubled down the left field line, scoring Amie Fugiel and Kandi Weinberg. Both Fugiel and Weinberg had drawn walks from SIUE's winning pitcher Sabra McCune, 12-3.
The Cougars tied the game in the bottom of the fifth. Waldo tripled to right field and stole home on what was to be a squeeze play. Missouri-Rolla pitcher Renee Roberts threw the ball in the dirt, and catcher Ashley Weiss was unable to put the tag on Waldo in time.
Waldo would score all three of SIUE's runs in the game as Holly Neuerburg doubled her home with one out in the seventh for the game-winning tally.
Colosimo scattered four hits in the nightcap and fanned four batters.
Emily Lenart hit her third home run of the season, a solo shot in the fifth inning.
