Cougars Season Opener Ends in Tie

GREELEY, Colo.— The women's soccer team opened their season Friday against Northern Colorado, with the game ending in a 1-1 tie.

"We competed tonight and I'm proud of their effort," commented Head Women's Soccer Coach Derek Burton. "We took another step forward as a group and saw many positives including, the amont of real quality scoring chances we created."

The game was scoreless until an own goal was scored by the opposing team at minute 53, giving SIUE the advantage. The Bears responded during the 76th minute when they scored their only goal of the game, after totaling eight shots on goal. 

"It is nice to get our first overtime game out of the way, so we can chalk that expereince up," added Burton. 

On the evening for the Cougars, Bella Henderson recorded seven saves throughout the game in goal, while only giving up one goal. "Bella was able to handle some tough services and long throw ins," said Burton. "Her kicking game this evening was another strong aspect for us."

The team will have a quick turn around and will play one last game in Coloardo. "We have another tough match on Sunday, but it will be a great test. " I like the fighting spirit this team is developing and am looking forward to the next match," Burton stated.

The Cougars will be back in action on Sunday as they travel to Colorado State for a game time set for 1 p.m.
