EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – The SIUE women's soccer team fell to UT Martin 3-0 Friday night. The Cougar drop to 4-6 (3-2 Ohio Valley Conference) on the season while UT Martin improves to 8-2 (3-0 OVC).
The Skyhawks started the scoring off in the 40th minute with an Amy McGivern goal. McGivern headed home her fourth goal of the season from a Sara Ketis free kick.
"The set piece was a good play by them, and a good finish," SIUE Head Coach Derek Burton said. "We saw it on video and should have been more prepared."
SIUE's Courtney Benning had a good look on goal in the 29th minute, but UTM goalkeeper Erica Myers (5-1) made a good save.
At the half, UT Martin outshot SIUE 7-2. In the first half the Cougars put some pressure on the Skyhawks, but the UTM defense held strong.
UT Martin opened up the scoring in the second half with a Kaci Mitchell goal. Mitchell scored the goal from a Katelyn Colvin corner kick.
In the 68th minute the Skyhawks put the game away with their third goal. Danae Kaldaridou took a shot off a deflected save from SIUE goalkeeper Jensen Schoch. Samantha Kelly was credited with the assist from her deflected shot.
"Mistakes lead to mistakes," added Burton. "They did to us what we did to our opponents last weekend. We were a little hesitant and showed a bit of our youth and inexperience tonight and UT Martin made us pay tonight."
The Skyhawks outshot the Cougars 16-6. Becca Jostes led the Cougars with two shots. Schoch recorded five saves on the night.
"We have to look at the things that we can do better," Burton said. "We will turn the page and we have our next opportunity Sunday. We have to recover mentally and physically to be ready to play on the road against Belmont."
SIUE will be back in action Sunday as they travel to face Belmont. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
