The SIUE women's soccer team will look to keep its momentum this weekend when it travels to McKendree on Friday and plays host to Mercyhurst Sunday.
SIUE will be looking to avenge last year's losses in both games. Mercyhurst defeated the Cougars 2-1 last year, and McKendree handed SIUE a 4-1 defeat at Korte Stadium last season.
"We are still working on team chemistry and trying to build combinations to see who works best with each other," said Coach Lynda Bowers.
The Cougars are coming off an opening weekend that yielded two very different victories. They came back from the largest deficit in school history (three goals) to top South Dakota 4-3 on Friday then shutdown Ashland in a 3-0 victory on Sunday.
"The team showed a lot of character in the win against South Dakota," Bowers said. "They kept trying and trying and never played below 100 percent.
"In the Ashland game, Ashland may have came out stronger but we contained them. Every player played to win."
Christen Carducci (Powell, Ohio) scored two goals and added two assists on the weekend. Sara Decker (St. Louis) and Ann Crawford (St. Louis) each a goal and two assists in the two games.
SIUE fans got a glimpse of SIUE's youth as freshman Kristine Armstrong (St. Peters, Mo.) and Christina Stremlau (St. Louis) each scored big goals this weekend. In Sunday's win against Ashland, freshmen Padra Bencini (Carbondale) and Kayla Fromme (New Berlin) did a good job containing Ashland's attack.
"The freshman played great," Bowers said. "Their confidence level is a lot higher than it was before the season."
