EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – SIUE women's basketball Head Coach Paula Buscher announced Friday that Jay'Nee Alston (Fort Smith, Arkansas) will join the Cougars next season.
Alston, who will have two years of eligibility, transfers to SIUE from Independence Community College where she averaged 10 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game last season.
"Jay'nee is an athletic, combination guard who can play the point or off-guard positions," said Buscher. "She is a quick, deceptive guard who can knock down the three-point shot and has the ability to get to the basket in the open court. She is a tough competitor who will give maximum effort on both sides of the floor."
Alston helped ICC (Independence, Kansas) advance to the Region VI Quarterfinals this past season.
"Jay'nee Alston is such a great young woman with a wonderful family," said Leslie Crane, the head coach for Independence Community College. "She is an exceptional worker in the classroom and on the basketball court. She is a great role model for younger players as she tirelessly gives of herself to make others around her better. SIUE has recruited an exceptional young woman who will bring her leadership, dedication and loyalty to their Cougar Family."
The 5-foot, 8-inch guard played prep basketball at Northside High School, where she helped her team win two conference titles. As a sophomore, Northside won the state championship against hometown rivalp Southside. As a junior, she earned All-tournament team honors at the Tournament of Champions after a state runner-up finish for Northside. During her senior season, Northside finished with a 22-2 record.
She expects to major in psychology at SIUE. Her parents are Jeffery and Pamela Alston.
