A solid defense went a long way for the SIUE women's basketball team. The Cougars stifled Tennessee Tech 60-49 to win their Ohio Valley Conference opener. The Cougars allowed the fewest points thus far this season. They also held Missouri-St. Louis to 49 points on Dec. 11—and limited Tennessee Tech to 23-of-64 shooting, including 2 of 17 from 3-point land.
Gwen Adams has recorded double-doubles in each of her last three games against Bethune-Cookman (19 pts.-13 reb.), Illinois State (10 pts.-10 reb.) and Tennessee Tech (18 pts-13 reb.). She now has

The Colonels, the runner-up at the OVC Tournament last season, are 4-10 overall this season after defeating Southeast Missouri 74-63 on the road to open OVC play. EKU allowed just two points in the second quarter. Alexus Cooper, Jalen O'Bannon and Shavontae Naylor all are averaging more than 12 points per game.
SIUE leads the series 7-2 and have won the last two games. Last season, SIUE won by its biggest margin of 15 points (89-74).
This is the first of three consecutive road contests for the Cougars. SIUE travels to Morehead State (Jan. 7) and Austin Peay (Jan. 11). The Cougars' next home contest is Jan. 15 against Murray State.
SIUE is No. 1 in the OVC in three-point field goal percentage at 37.4 percent but are sixth overall in three-pointers made (79).
HITTING YOUR FREE THROWS
Adams is No. 2 in the nation and No. 1 in the Ohio Valley Conference in free throw percentage at 95.7 percent. She is 66 of 69 from the line this season. She has made 32 in a row over the last four games. Adams has missed two shots away from SIUE.

Donshel Beck leads the OVC in free throw attempts with 84 and is 23rd nationally in that statistical category. Gwen Adams is 19th nationally in free throws made (66) and leads the OVC in that category.
HANDING OUT ASSISTS
Nakiah Bell leads the Cougars in assists with 59 through 14 games and is No. 1 in assist-to-turnover ratio with 2.27.
ON THE BOARDS
Sydney Bauman tied her career high rebounds total with 10 at Northern Illinois. She also is 11th in the OVC with 1.00 block per game.

SIUE has three current players among the top 40 in scoring all-time and each are playing in their third season of competition at SIUE. Adams is 33rd with 816 points. Beck jumped up to 34th overall with 750 points. Jones is 40th with 648 points.
SIUE women's basketball was picked to finish fourth in the Ohio Valley Conference after advancing to the conference tournament semifinals for the second straight year.
