EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – SIUE women's basketball Head Coach Paula Buscher got her opportunity to see several offensive and defensive combinations Sunday and found mixed reviews in a 69-60 victory over Lindenwood.
"I saw some positive things tonight and then I saw an awful lot of things we need to work on," said Buscher, who begins her fifth season at the helm for the Cougars. "It's kind of exactly what I thought would happen."
Sidney Smith and Lauren White led all scorers with 14 points in SIUE's lone exhibition contest. Micah Jones scored 10 in her return to the Cougar lineup after suffering a season-long injury during last season's exhibition contest.
"We know how good Micah is and what she can do," noted Buscher. "She was nervous about this game. You would have thought we were trying to get her to fly. Once she settled in, she did a good job."
With a handful of newcomers to the lineup, Buscher is looking for the best groups of five that provide offense as well as a steady defense.
"We had some different combinations in there at times," she said. "Some of the combinations I wasn't sure I was going to like and actually there's one I like a lot."
The Cougars' defense held Lindenwood, an NCAA Division II school, to 29.3 percent shooting from the field. Charisse Williams and Kallie Bildner scored 10 points each to lead the Lions offense.
"We have to play a little bit better position defense," said Buscher. "Definitely the biggest problem I thought we had is turning the ball over. We didn't have a lot of patience on the offensive end."
SIUE begins the 2016-17 regular season Friday with a road contest at South Dakota. Game time is 7 p.m.
