This is the first meeting between the programs since the 2010-11 season when SIUE dropped a 71-59 decision in Kansas City.



Kansas opened with a 16-2 run and held off the Cougars for a 72-56 victory in Lawrence, Kan. Despite three first-half fouls, CoCo Moore led the Cougars with 17 points. Jessie Wendt scored 16, and Micah Jones led all players with 10 rebounds.



Tierny Austin, who averaged 11.4 points per game last season, was named to the Ohio Valley Conference's preseason All-OVC team. The 10-person team includes five players who have not previously been named All-OVC.



SIUE is 23-11 all-time in season openers since 1979. The Cougars lost their opener 66-51 last season against Purdue.



Coach Buscher and her staff signed five freshmen to this year's roster. They are Katelynn Martinez (Champaign, Ill.), Micah Jones (Cowden, Ill.), Alexis Chappelle (St. Louis, Mo.), Miranda Brandt (Chamois, Mo.), and Syerra Cunningham (Beach Park, Ill.)



Shronda Butts, who previously played at Bradley, will sit out the 2013-14 season due to NCAA Division I transfer rules.



Kansas City is playing in its first season in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC). The Kangaroos are 0-2 to start the season with losses at North Texas and Southeast Missouri. Kim Nezianya scored a career high 26 points Thursday in a 76-74 loss at Southeast Missouri. Four players are averaging double figures to open the season (Ellise O'Connor, Nezianya, Kelsey Barnwell, and Calli White).

Austin, a junior, moved up two spots among all-time scorers. She is now 36th with 582 points, passing Ashley Bey (575, 2008-10) and Tina Rich (577, 1985-87).



Monday nights this season are Family Fun Night presented by The Cup. It includes four tickets, four drinks, four hot dogs and a coupon for the family to The Cup as well as access to the Family Fun Zone (inflatables) in the South Me.



SIUE, coming off its first appearance in the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament, will play teams from 10 different conferences and eight teams that advanced to postseason play in 2012-13. The list of teams in the postseason are:
