NASHVILLE, Tenn. – SIUE's Tierny Austin (Rockford, Ill.), who averaged 11.4 points per game last season, has been tabbed as a member of the 2013-14 preseason All-Ohio Valley Conference women's basketball team.
The OVC preseason All-Conference team and the preseason picks for OVC women's basketball were announced Tuesday at the league's annual Media Day in Nashville.
Austin, a 5-foot, 9-inch junior forward, started all 31 games for the Cougars last season and led the team in minutes played with 31.5 per contest. She also averaged 6.6 rebounds per game.
The SIUE women's basketball team earned two first-place votes and was picked to finish second in the OVC West Division behind UT Martin in a vote of the league's coaches and sports information directors. The Skyhawks received the other 22 first-place votes after earning the OVC's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament last season.
After UT Martin and the Cougars, the picks for the OVC West Division were Eastern Illinois for third place, Murray State fourth, Southeast Missouri fifth, and Austin Peay sixth.
Tennessee Tech, with 12 first-place votes, was the league's choice to win the OVC East Division, edging out Belmont which had nine first-place votes. They were followed by Eastern Kentucky, Morehead State, Tennessee State, and Jacksonville State.
Jasmine Newsome, of UT Martin, was the league's pick as the preseason Player of the Year. She averaged 22.6 points per game last season for the Skyhawks.
