Coming off of three big victories to open the regular season, the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville women's basketball team is ready to begin its Great Lakes Valley Conference schedule.
The Cougars play next against Bellarmine Thursday at 5:45 p.m. in Louisville, Ky. They will then finish their road trip Saturday versus Northern Kentucky at 1 p.m. in Highland Heights, Ky. Both games will be on SIUE's Web Radio at http://www.siue.edu/WEBRADIO/.
SIUE's offense has posted three straight games of 80-plus scoring and managed to apply some strong defense as well. The Cougars have outscored opponents so far this season by an average of 33.6 points per game.
"We are playing well for the most part and finding ways to score," said SIUE women's basketball coach Wendy Hedberg.
The Cougars start a tough conference road trip this week against Bellarmine and Northern Kentucky.
SIUE's next opponent, Bellarmine, is coming off a major upset having knocked off No. 1-ranked Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Mich.
"We have to able to contain them (Bellarmine) inside because they have a few six footers who play well down low," said Hedberg.
"I think the players are excited to get conference play started, and this is probably the toughest road trip in the conference," said Hedberg.
The Cougars are doing a good job of sharing the ball and scoring points, added Hedberg.
SIUE has two players averaging double figures in scoring with Amber Shelton (Edwardsville) at 18.7 points per game and Whitney Sykes (Pontoon Beach) at 12.7 points per game. Both players are shooting better than 60 percent from the field after three games.
Assist leaders for the Cougars include Elyse Morris (Prophetstown) with 7.0 per game and Amy Austin (Jeffersonville, Ind.) with 4.0 per game.
