EDWARDSVILLE, ILL. -- Southern Illinois University Edwardsville women's basketball is headed back to the NCAA Division II Tournament.
SIUE was among the 64 teams selected to the NCAA Tournament field and will play Drury Friday in the opening round of the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional. Game time will be set Monday. The Great Lakes Regional, consisting of eight teams, will head to Romeoville on the campus of Lewis University.
The tournament begins Friday with the four quarterfinal game. Saturday will feature the two semifinal game. The championship game will be played Monday.
Lewis, 27-3 and the top seed in the region, will face eighth-seeded Bellarmine, 19-10, in the first round. The winner of the Drury-SIUE game will face the winner in the regional semifinals. Third-seeded Grand Valley State, 21-7, will play sixth-seeded Gannon, 24-5. Second-seeded Northern Kentucky will play seventh-seeded Ferris State in the quarterfinal round.
This is SIUE's fifth selection to the NCAA Tournament, including a play-in game during the 1993-1994 season. SIUE last made the trip to the NCAA Tournament during the 2000-2001 season.
Amber Shelton, of Edwardsville, helped the Cougars to a 20-8 record this season, averaging 19.4 points and 5.0 rebounds per game. Whitney Sykes, a junior from Pontoon Beach, averaged 16.0 points per game and led the team in three-pointers with 82.
