EDWARDSVILLE, ILL. -- Two members of the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville women's basketball team marked their place in the record books last week.
Julianne McMillen (Pana) and Whitney Sykes (Pontoon Beach) set career milestones and hope to extend them as the season continues.
In SIUE's 66-64 loss to Drury, McMillen became a member of the 1,000 point club. McMillen finished with 14 points on the night while only needing eight to reach 1,000 points.
"She has played extremely well in conference for us offensively this season," said SIUE women's basketball coach Wendy Hedberg.
Amber Shelton (Edwardsville) and Sykes both had 20 points on the night for the Cougars.
"A couple people played well. We just needed a little more support for the win," said Hedberg.
Sykes had four three-pointers during her 20-point performance, which tied her for most career three-pointers made with Terri Evans (1992-96). Sykes took the record on her first attempts of the second half against GLVC rival Rockhurst.
SIUE, now 14-5 overall and 8-4 in GLVC play, defeated Rockhurst 82-74 as Sykes finished with five three-pointers. The Cougars, who shot 51.9 percent form the field, were led by Shelton's 30 points.
"It is amazing because people know about her (Sykes), but she still finds a way to get open," said Hedberg.
Next up for the Cougars is the non-conference Oakland City. SIUE has not lost to the Oaks in the teams' 11 previous meetings.
"They play hard and are a scrappy team," said Hedberg. "This will be a good game to focus on what we need to do to correct some things from the past two games,"
The Cougars will face off against GLVC opponent Quincy Saturday. Game time is 5:15 p.m. in Quincy.
"It is a tough place to go into and play," said Hedberg. "They are fighting for position in the conference, and they will play tough because every game down the stretch means something."
