Cougars Will Face GLVC West Contenders

January 22, 2007

EDWARDSVILLE, ILL. -- The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville women's basketball team is still on top of the Great Lakes Valley Conference West division after going 1-1 over the weekend but will put first place on the line Thursday.
The Cougars earned an overtime win against Saint Joseph's before losing to a strong Indianapolis team.
"In both games, we got outplayed in the first five minutes and then had to fight our way back," said SIUE women's basketball coach Wendy Hedberg.
SIUE found a way to win in the Saint Joseph's game after getting their first lead of the game late in the second half. Whitney Sykes (Pontoon Beach) hit the game-winning shot, a 30-footer at the buzzer in overtime
"I give them credit for staying in there," said Hedberg.
Sykes finished with 27 points and Julianne McMillen (Pana) had 22 points stepping up offensively while SIUE's leading scorer Amber Shelton (Edwardsville) scored 12 of the team's points.
In the Indianapolis game, the Cougars came within six points with nine minutes to play in the second half before having some untimely turnovers, said Hedberg.
After the two game road trip, both Sykes and McMillen are close to setting individual milestones.
Sykes only needs four more three-pointers to tie and five to break the career record for three-pointers made. The record is currently held by former SIUE standout Terri Evans with 172.
McMillen only needs eight more points to reach 1,000 points for her career.
Next up for the Cougars will be two tough GLVC match-ups versus Drury and Rockhurst.
Drury is currently second in the GLVC West, one-half game behind SIUE. The Cougars face Drury Thursday at 5:30 p.m. and Rockhurst at 1 p.m. Saturday.
"We will be playing for first place at home. Hopefully, we can play the way we know we can play," said Hedberg. "We just need to focus on getting back to playing our game and get off to a good start."
