EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- Amy Austin (Jeffersonville, Ind.) emerged as another offensive threat with her recent 20-point performance at Missouri-St. Louis.
"She is one of the top in assists on the team, and now she is starting to look for the open shot," said Southern Illinois University Edwardsville women's basketball coach Wendy Hedberg. "Before Austin may have been a little too unselfish by always looking to pass, but the confidence in her shooting should carry over into the second half of the season."
Austin's career high was even more important to the Cougars because Whitney Sykes (Pontoon Beach) with nine points and Amber Shelton (Edwardsville) with 13 points were both below their season scoring averages against UMSL.
"This team is about stepping up when you have too," added Hedberg.
Hedberg said that although they played well against UMSL that their rebounding is lacking, and they must be strong on the boards in the upcoming games.
Along with UMSL the team had a close win over Missouri-Rolla where Allison Fogle (Seminole, Fla.) had a double-double with 17 points and 14 rebounds. The two road wins brought the Cougars to 11-2 overall and 5-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
The Cougars' 5-1 GLVC record puts them one-half game behind Southern Indiana going into their matchup Thursday at 5:30 p.m. in the Vadalabene Center. Southern Indiana is undefeated in league play and holds an identical 11-2 overall record.
"It doesn't get any better than this -- the two top teams in the conference playing each other for first place," said Hedberg.
Going into the USI game, the Cougars are just focused on doing things a little bit better, including the little things like setting better picks and doing a good job of hitting the boards.
"We are looking forward to Thursday and hopefully we can get a big crowd out to the VC," said Hedberg.
After USI the Cougars will face-off against another strong GLVC team in Kentucky Wesleyan. The Panthers enter the week 11-2 overall and 4-1 in GLVC play.
"They are coming off of two great wins at home over the weekend and have a lot of weapons," said Hedberg.
